HK Institute of Biomedical Sciences and Chengde Medical University Forge Academic Partnership: Prof. Wong Hei Yun Appointed Visiting Professor

On April 16, 2025, the Hong Kong Institute of Biomedical Sciences (HKIBS) officially launched an in-depth academic collaboration with Chengde Medical University (CDMU). Prof. Wong Hei Yun, Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist of HKIBS, was appointed as a Visiting Professor of CDMU for a five-year term. The appointment ceremony was held at CDMU, attended by Prof. Li Yuhong, President of CDMU, Prof. Liu Gang, Vice President of CDMU, and heads of relevant departments. The two parties reached consensus on core issues including the joint construction of interdisciplinary research platforms, joint training of high-level talents, and the industrialization of research achievements.

The Appointment Ceremony: A Strategic Partnership for Innovation

 

At the ceremony, Prof. Li Yuhong presented the visiting professor certificate to Prof. Wong and pinned the university badge on him. She stated: “Chengde Medical University has been deeply engaged in medical education and scientific research for 80 years, building a disciplinary system with clinical medicine as the core, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as the characteristic, and biomedical engineering as the innovation growth point. The research achievements of Prof. Wong’s team in the modernization of TCM, synthetic biology, and nanomedicine will inject strong innovation momentum into our university’s construction of the ‘New Medical Disciplines’ and help us achieve leapfrog development in interdisciplinary fields.”

 


Prof. Liu Gang, Vice President of CDMU, emphasized in his opening remarks that this collaboration is a key milestone in the university’s talent recruitment strategy. CDMU will fully support the scientific research and teaching work of Prof. Wong’s team, and jointly build an influential interdisciplinary platform integrating TCM and biomedical sciences.

 


Prof. Wong expressed his gratitude to CDMU for its trust and support, and introduced the core research directions of HKIBS: “HKIBS has long focused on cutting-edge fields such as the biological decoding of TCM theories, nano-drug delivery systems, and the biosynthesis of endangered medicinal plants. Our team brings together top talents in biomedical engineering, clinical medicine, and TCM. The profound accumulation of CDMU in TCM education and clinical practice is highly aligned with the scientific research advantages of HKIBS. Taking this appointment as an opportunity, we will promote in-depth cooperation with CDMU in key research projects, interdisciplinary talent training, and the transformation of scientific research achievements, exploring innovative research paths that integrate the holistic view and Yin-Yang theory of TCM with the precise regulation of bioengineering, contributing to the modernization of TCM and the high-quality development of the biomedical industry.”

 



Key Cooperation Focus Areas

 

The collaboration centers on three core pillars to build an integrated industry-university-research-application system:

 

1. Joint Construction of Interdisciplinary Research Platforms: Leveraging CDMU’s strengths in TCM disciplines, the two parties will co-build an interdisciplinary research platform for TCM and biomedical sciences, conducting joint research on topics such as the biosynthesis of endangered medicinal materials, TCM nano-drug delivery systems, and intelligent medical imaging technology upgrades, to promote the deep integration of TCM theories and modern biomedical technologies.

 

2. Joint Training of High-Level Talents: The two parties will establish an interdisciplinary talent training base, cultivating compound talents with both TCM theoretical literacy and modern bioengineering capabilities through joint supervision, academic lectures, and research training, to deliver innovative scientific research talents to the industry.

 

3. Transformation and Industrialization of Scientific Research Achievements: Utilizing HKIBS’ advantages in biomedical industrialization, the collaboration will drive the clinical translation and industrial application of joint research outcomes, supporting the commercialization of innovative TCM achievements to serve public health.

 

Looking Ahead: Driving the Modernization of TCM Through Collaboration

 

Since its establishment, the Hong Kong Institute of Biomedical Sciences has been committed to “promoting the modernization of TCM and driving innovation in the biomedical industry”, focusing on interdisciplinary research and industry-university-research cooperation. This partnership with Chengde Medical University marks an important step in HKIBS’ expansion of academic cooperation networks in mainland China and its promotion of cross-innovation between TCM and modern biomedical sciences.

 

Moving forward, HKIBS will build on Prof. Wong’s appointment to deepen multi-faceted cooperation with CDMU, address key challenges in the modernization of TCM through interdisciplinary innovation, support the inheritance and innovative development of TCM, and contribute expertise to the Healthy China Initiative.
